This month marks the 50th anniversary of the passage of U.S. Safe Drinking Water Act.
“The Act has made an unmistakable positive impact since its passage in December 1974, becoming a pillar of water resources engineering, utility management, and public health policy,” says assistant professor Dr. Rob Sowby, who has written about the subject and organized a symposium earlier this year.
BYU civil engineering students learn about drinking water throughout their program of study, from the required courses CCE 102 (Sustainable Infrastructure) and CE 232 (Fluid Mechanics), to junior core options like CE 351 (Environmental Engineering) and CE 331 (Hydrology), and on to graduate courses like CE 532 (Urban Water Infrastructure), CE 551 (Water and Wastewater Treatment Design), and CE 555 (Environmental Chemistry). Students also support research on water supply and quality.
