Competitions

WHAT ARE STUDENT COMPETITIONS?
The CFM program offers students the opportunity to compete in competitions with other universities that offer CFM degrees. The competitions are a culminating experience that brings together all the courses that students have taken and applies them to a real-world project. The competitions are also a great means for students to network with industry professionals, faculty, and fellow students, and to aid in their search for summer work experience as well as full-time employment.

The competitions vary, but generally a team of students are assigned a specific role in the competition and together the team solves a real-life problem. A faculty member sponsors each team. Additional resources are also available to assist the team members in preparation for the competition.

The competitions have varying venues and dates. Brief summaries are included below.

PREPARATION
All student competitions require a significant time commitment. Students wanting to compete should plan their schedule accordingly in order to balance their time appropriately. The actual competition is usually held during the semester so competitors must notify each instructor informing them of the future absences and strive to turn in homework early. Students will meet together regularly at a specified class time and at other times as needed by the team.

Competitions are designed to help students learn how to work in teams. Collaboration and negotiation skills are necessary for each competition. Since a majority of the work consists of pre-competition preparation, students are expected to build one another's skills and work to create a cohesive team.

Students desiring to compete must apply to a team at the end of Winter semester which will be advertised in seminars. However, occasionally there are open positions after the team rosters are announced.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
All students are eligible to compete. Teams often consist of sophomore to senior students. Faculty sponsors will finalize team rosters after applications are submitted. As many teams have a limit to competitors, it is possible that an applicant may not get on a team or not get on their first choice.

SKILLS COMMONLY USED DURING A COMPETITION

  • Architectural Drafting and Design
  • Building Information Modeling (BIM)
  • Communication
  • Cost Estimating
  • Data collection and research
  • Oral Presentation preparation and delivery
  • Project management
  • Scheduling
  • Safety Planning & Site Preparation
  • Technical Writing
