Biography

Dr. Paul Richards received his B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Brigham Young University (BYU), and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Dr. Richards also has an executive MBA that he completed while working as Vice President of R&D at DuraFuse Frames. Dr. Richards has more than 20 years of professional experience in academia (BYU, UCSD) and industry (Degenkolb Engineers, DuraFuse Frames). His specialty area is seismic design of steel buildings. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in the states of Utah and California. Dr. Richards is originally from West Jordan, Utah.

Research Interests

Large-scale experimental testing of buildings and sub-assemblies; special moment frame connections; buckling-restrained braces (and frames); nonlinear response history analysis and functional recovery of buildings; finite element analysis of seismic connections and replaceable structural fuses; resilient low-cost seismic systems.

Teaching Interests

Seismic design, structural analysis, structural dynamics, steel design, mechanics.
