Why CFM?
CONSTRUCTION AND FACILITIES MANAGEMENT (CFM) MISSION STATEMENT
We develop innovators and leaders for the built environment who are disciples of Jesus Christ, value relationships, and strive for excellence.
We develop these innovators and leaders for the built environment by focusing on broad educational exposure to both traditional and cutting-edge practices within various built environment professions and industries. CFM course materials cover fundamental topics such as materials and methods, design, estimating, safety, law, and scheduling as well as advanced courses in project management, preconstruction services, and company management. The CFM program is accompanied by general education, religion, and Civil and Construction Engineering (CCE) coursework. Students will also deepen their knowledge through elective tracks: construction management, facilities and property management, real estate development, infrastructure development and management, or architecture and design. CFM prepares students to be the next generation’s innovators and leaders with a strong foundation in problem solving, stewardship, ethics, technology, communication, teamwork, and strategic business leadership.
CFM VALUES
We expect students to experience and contribute to the following as they participate in curricular and extracurricular activities at BYU and beyond:
CHRIST-CENTERED
We focus on becoming true disciples of Jesus Christ. We celebrate this as the defining characteristic and value of a CFM/BYU education.
FAMILY
We aim to develop meaningful relationships that go beyond the classroom. We will then nurture and maintain those connections to the benefit of individuals and communities.
LEGACY
We recognize that we are connected to previous leaders and innovators. We will make decisions that reflect those who have come before and sustain those who follow.
EXCELLENCE
We strive for excellence in process and product. We pursue exemplary success both in the classroom and industry, emphasizing professionalism and integrity.
Program Educational Objectives
1. Commit to lives of faith in Jesus Christ demonstrated by service to the family, community, church, and profession.
2. Exhibit leadership characteristics and innovation in managing projects, people, processes, resources, and while serving in the industry and in their communities.
3. Demonstrate an ability to communicate and work effectively in a professional and ethical manner.
4. Demonstrate the desire and ability to learn continuously through study, practice, and faith to meet the changing demands of their professional and personal lives.
ACCREDITATION
BYU CFM is nationally accredited (ABET) with faculty who care not only about the individual student but also communities and the broader built environment. These faculty are well-respected across the country, win awards and recognitions, publish in prestigious journals, and contribute to ongoing professional practice in many ways.
CURRICULUM
Our students will leave BYU to be leaders and innovators for the built environment. The program curriculum broadly covers planning, design, preconstruction, project management, scheduling, estimating, construction and facilities management phases of major projects, company management, etc. The curriculum has been meticulously designed and regularly reviewed to prepare each student for a broad range of professional and/or academic pursuits.
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING
A key aspect of the CFM program and BYU’s mission and aims involve a strong emphasis on experiential learning. CFM students are encouraged and required to gain experience in many ways. Working closely with faculty, students have opportunities to participate in national team competitions, participate in studies abroad, perform mentored research, and develop skills in specific areas of their interest. These hands-on opportunities not only prepare them for their future careers, but also create amazing networking opportunities with fellow students, faculty, and professionals.
BYU CFM ALUMNI
All BYU alumni share a common bond and ability to engage many resources of the university, but they also are encouraged to return, engage, and give back. CFM alumni go forth to serve across the world and in nearly every aspect of the built environment and its professional industries. While not an exhaustive list, CFM graduates commonly see careers in the following sectors: commercial, residential, physical facilities, heavy civil, infrastructure, real estate, architecture, design, government, urban planning, energy, hospitals, schools, retail, subcontractor/trades, entrepreneurship, and the list goes on. CFM graduates are celebrated as excelling in leadership positions as they develop their careers supported by high integrity and a strong work ethic.
